Furness Library, located in the heart of the University
of Pennsylvania campus, is arguably one of the “all-time
greatest works of American architecture”. It
was designed by the “idiosyncratic” architect
Mr. Frank Furness, in 1891. Restoring and preserving
the
exterior and interior of this unique building became
the design challenge for the historical architects
at Marianna
Thomas Architects, the structural engineers at Keast &
Hood and the General Contractor, R.M. Shoemaker Co. MPG
was chosen to execute the historic restoration of both
the brick, sandstone and terra cotta exterior and the
brick and terra cotta interior of this of this highly
mannered Victorian – Gothic work of art. The exterior
terra cotta and brownstone replacement/patching and the
repointing encompassed virtually the entire building.
At the completion of the project, the 116,600 gross sq.
ft. library had been restored
to its original 19th Century splendor. |
